Discover things to do in and around Oakham
The Blue Ball at Braunston - Country Pub & Kitchen is an historic 17th Century thatched inn, at the heart of the idyllic rural Rutland village of Braunston-in-Rutland, 2 miles from the county town of Oakham & a million miles away from the hustle & bustle of modern daily life.
Plan your day out or break to include a lovely lunch or dinner at The Blue Ball. Families, cyclists & walkers welcome.
Escape to an unspoilt slice of England & enjoy our rolling countryside, outdoor activities and charming towns and villages. Rutland Water is only 5 miles away - with plenty of options for fishing, walking, cycling, riding, watersports, family fun and sightseeing.
Dogs are very welcome in our Drinks Bar & on our Garden Terrace. However, please note that, aside from guide dogs, we're unable to accept dogs at indoor dining tables in any of our restaurant rooms.
There is a small car park and plenty of on-street parking in the village.
Disabled access is limited here by the very nature of our historic, higgledy-piggledy 17th century inn (3 cottages knocked into 1 overtime, hence a series of linked, different sized, dining rooms on slightly different levels from one another and, therefore, with occasional internal steps, narrower doorways & tight turns in parts) which means that we're unable to offer full disabled access - as much as we'd love to.
The best that we can do is give accurate access info and let customers decide for themselves whether or not the building and toilets will be navigable to them, depending on their mobility issues:
Main Entrance: 1 external 8" step (grab rail on wall) into Porch + 1 separate, internal 8" step into 1st Dining Room (max table size = 10) which is then on a level.
1st Dining Room into next Dining Room, 'The Snug' (max table size 10-12 (at a push) - 1 internal step. Grab rail on the wall.
Snug into lobbies for Private Dining Room (max table size = 6-8) or through to large Rear Restaurant room (max table size = c26 at a single, long table or up to 40 at different tables- or through to toilet lobby - 3 separate steps & narrower doorways & 2 narrower turns if heading to the loos.
Please be aware that neither the male or female loos were constructed with accessibility for wheelchair users in mind, although they are level. The male loo is roomier than the female loos, which require customers to turn right.
Although some of our regular, disabled customers are comfortable with accepting hands on help to get in the entrance, wheelchair users would be unable to access the loos independently (and in many cases, not at all) using their chairs.
By all means, pop in at any time during pub opening hours to have a look for yourself, if you think we'd be a viable venue, taking account of this access info. If not, then we completely understand and wish you all the very best with pinpointing a more suitable venue.
Braunston Walks (Walks Leaflet available from The Blue Ball or download a copy here. Feel free to arrange in advance to pre order your lunch from The Blue Ball & we'll have it ready for you when you arrive.
